Got the green car pass for two weeks in 2019. Every time except one, when we took the bullet train, we were able to sit in green car. Green car west of Shin-Osaka are only a half car on the Sakura, versus three cars on Hikari. Also got to ride the green car back from Kamakura. We did not realize it going from Shinagawa, but noticed it while waiting on the platform to return back to Shinagawa.

I am planning a 7-week trip to Japan and will probably need two 3-week passes. Is it possible to purchase both of them before leaving and still maintain validity for the second pass? I know that it takes time to receive the passes and am just wondering if the second pass is still going to be valid by the time I need to activate it? Also, what happens if you activate a pass and the validity period expires during the 3-week period? Does the activation extend the validity or does it expire on a set date no matter what? Can I go to a ticket office and book all of the train rides covered by my JR Pass at once? In your experience, how long does it take (on average) to reserve a seat? Sorry for all of the questions……I just want to avoid as many surprises as possible. Thanks in advance for your answers. 🙂

so im gonig to japan for the first time next may and alone. i plan on doing alot of eating and shopping and sight seeing as ill be there for 3 weeks. my question is is it normal to take a trip to kyoto or osaka and come back to tokyo if i book a place for 2-3 weeks in the city for less hassle? im still not sure if i want to get a jr pass as i plan to spend the majority of my time in tokyo and surrounding citys. however if its normal and possible to go to kyoto and osaka to shop and eat and return to tokyo i would love to as to save money and have 1 main place to place the whole trip.

I'm going to be there for 17 days. Going from tokyo to Kyoto to Hiroshima and taking a lot of day trips to other cities like nikko, nara, Osaka and hokone.

My question is would it be cheaper to get the JR pass for 14 days but wait to activate it and pay for the train from narita to Tokyo out of pocket or buy a 21 day pass.

When we arrived I was so sleep deprived (we did a 12 hr layover in Germany before we went on to Japan) that I forgot we needed to exchange our vouchers at the airport. I didn't realize my mistake until the next day because we had to pay separately for a special bus to our first hotel and the hotel was also on the Yurikamome line which required Pasmos that I had pre-ordered. So the next day we took the Yurikamome line to Shimbashi station with our Pasmos and I was feeling pretty good about how easily we were handling the trains in Japan. As we were trying to switch over to the JR Line we were stopped and told to go to the office down the hall and at this point I finally remembered we were supposed to exchange our vouchers. (Confidence shattered) After waiting in a line for a while we were finally told that the closest station we had to go to in order to exchange our vouchers for passes was Tokyo Station. Luckily we were heading to Tokyo Station anyway, but we ended up having to pay 🤦‍♀️ to take a JR line 🤦‍♀️😓 to finally exchange our vouchers for passes.

I also forgot that when I was researching our trip to Nikko I found out we would have to pay an additional $40 to extend our JR passes to reach Kinugawa Onsen Station. That morning we went in to reserve our seats on the Shinkansen and I could tell that the poor guy at the counter who struggled with English was worried about something because he kept checking the map on the pass against another map on the counter. He finally went to a co-worker who came back a few minutes later to explain that we had to pay extra with cash. At that moment two things went through my mind 1) whoops, I totally forgot about that and 2) wait, are we going to have enough cash on hand for Nikko after I pay for this? We ended up being alright, but my husband wasn't impressed I had forgotten about a $40 extra charge. 😂🤣

Thanks for the explanation on the JR Pass. Probably not cost effective for my trip next year as I'm flying into Osaka for Super Nintendo World and then heading to Tokyo for all the Christmas displays/markets, Tokyo Disney Resort, and all things gaming. I think I'm going to stick with my Suica card on my mobile phone.

I agree that the Green Car pass is not really necessary since the regular seats are already great. However, if you're going to ride on many long distance trains (Shinkansen and especially Limited Express), it might be worth it. Many Limited Express trains have the Green car in front of the train. And many of these trains have the front of the car wide open with a huge window. One of the best experiences I had was riding the Limited Express (Wide View) Shinano (it runs from Nagoya to Nagano) in the Green Car. I was seated in the Green car at the front of the train, and I could see the driver driving the train and see outside just as the driver did. So if you're a train enthusiast, the Green Pass might be well worth it.

Hi. I go to Tokyo twice a year. It’s nice out there right? My favorite places are Shibuya-Ku and Akihabara. I use the daily pass in my stay for 15 days in April and October. Hope to see your new Japan trip videos!
