It's so funny that I keep wanting to explore all the other fabulous areas in Thailand but we constantly get sucked back to Hatyai because of the cheapness of the food & the variety, all the supermarkets with the constant offers, the Songkla beach & market….

Being the 3rd largest city in Thailand, I wonder why Hat Yai doesn't have a large expat population. As you said in the video where to live in Thailand is a matter of personal preference and needs.
Some factors that may come into consideration for singles starting out living here:
1. Availability of condos for long term rent
2. Ease of public transport
3. Choice of entertainment (pubs, bars etc if that is their thing)
4. Weather (South Thailand is much warmer than the north)
5. Population than can communicate in basic English at least until you learn the local language.
6. Interesting places to go/see (not necessarily touristy places, but more general like to meet people and interact with locals)
