The coldest night I've ever had was in key west, spent all day snorkeling and in nothing but short pants fishing at night my body temperature dropped, remember, you can freeze to death in 80 degree water 🤔🕰️

Some fun facts from a frequent Keys visitor: 1) It's illegal to harvest conch from Florida waters so it's all imported; 2) Key Lime Pie is easy to make (hint: add 3oz of cream cheese for better texture). I had it deep-fried once (once–cloying!); 3) A car is an impediment in KW as parking is ridiculous, but we fly to FLL (MIA sucks) and rent a car so we can visit other Keys (and the Everglades). There's a lot of great flora and fauna easily accessible from the Overseas Hwy, such as the Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary (MM93.6) and a bunch of places in Islamorada, Marathon, and other spots (some even in KW, such as the Garden Club and Wildlife Center). We park and leave it while in KW and walk everywhere (staying in Old Town); 4) KW has a lot of history, and a self-guided walking tour is a great way to see it (and get some exercise). There are many informative plaques in front of various sites; 5) If you want an interesting side trip, check out the Dry Tortugas–interesting history and great snorkeling (and yeah–I'd rather use my own).

That wasn't an iguana; it was a curly-tailed lizard. Iguanas are herbivores and won't bother you. And they are beautiful. If you have the time, fly into Miami and drive down to Key West, stopping at some of the islands along the way. Each island is very different. Rent a boat or go swimming in Pennycamp on Key Largo. Go fishing off Islamorada. See the Key deer and swim with dolphins. If you like water, the drive across the 7 Mile Bridge is stunning. I won't mention my favorite Key because it's already attracting too many tourists. But it's worth exploring a variety of them, even if you don't make it all the way to Key West.

I lived there in the late to 70s into the 80s. Time has killed the key west old town charm…

Haha, 2 hour drive from Miami?!! Try 4 without much traffic.
That airport is modern compared to what it was in '94 when I flew in for my time stationed on Truman Annex. It was nothing more than a brick block building with a roller door from the tarmac. The luggage was put on cargo rollers through a window in the side of the building that looked like something you'd see in a warehouse. It's been modernized over the years, including what appears to be central AC. There were a lot of "don't" options here, but in the end none of them really matter besides the chickens and the lizards. One to add though, which is a legal issue, don't pick up/take a conch shell if you see one. Conch moves from one shell to another as they outgrow them. When you remove them, you are removing their options and they can die. You can receive a hefty fine if you are found to be possession of one.
My daughter and I just faced the drive down and back from Michigan, and then we walked across the entire island of Key West. It was amazing! ❤
It wasn't until we moored our boat in the marina that I appreciated being in KW was worth the price of admission. We could walk out at 2am and there was a party going on. Made all the difference in our KW experience as opposed to staying in marathon and driving in. Good job!
We were there in march and was at a store in Marathon and I told the lady there my son in law found a big conch (and I pronounced it the way it looked) and she corrected me lol, still to this day it feels weird to say Conk lol!
The most IMPORTANT "don't" is DON'T move to Key West (if you're smart)….
As someone who graduated from the university, trust me when I say these two things. Most importantly, you need to drink SO MUCH MORE WATER here than you are used to. You are going to sweat a lot more than usual because of the humidity so drink water before you are thirsty.
Second, don't complain about the bugs. It's paradise for everyone, not just us. Getting bitten by 3 mosquitoes in a minute means you are doing really good. If you don't like bugs, don't leave key west. The further up the keys you go the worse they get (until about the 7 mile, then they start to get a little better).
Our biggest don't is: Don't expect sandy beaches.
My wife, dog and I spend 2 months every summer in KW. It is my happy place. It is a very friendly non judgmental place. My dog loves it there. She is always welcomed everywhere and restaurants often give her snacks. If you are more mature go to LA te da. Great bar, good food and dancing some notes of the week. Go to Peppes for breakfast. Unknown fact for tourists. If you like thrift stores go to the Salvation Army thrift store. Great and varied things from clothing to collectibles and cheap. I walked out with my winter wardrobe for under ⁵⁰ dollars. Bought some antiques and gifts. Also go to Aids memorial. It is on a long pier with predominant locals. Have fun. Be friendly.
Amen on the accommodations. The amount of days I spent here without spending a ton of $$ are much higher than the expensive ones. You can survive just fine here on a limited budget
I tried conch the 1st time I was in Key West. It was like trying to eat rubber bands. However, key lime pie is stellar. I've been known to refuse chocolate for key lime. Also enjoyed staying at Casa Marina. Lovely place.
Key West is the best place I have ever been to. Live the airport. We stayed at the southernmost beach resort on the east side of Duval. Loved it. We could enjoy the busy part of Duval then go back to a quieter part to relax. Loved there was a bus to take you around the island during season. It is free. No driving or parking. Food was amazing. We always ate off the beaten path. Awesome. We did all the tourist attractions. Loved taking a boat to the old fort and snorkeling. Then we did a sunset cruise one evening. Awesome feeling. Feel like you are at the edge of the earth. So much more to love. Definitely go. It is so worth it.
Above ALL……do NOT ask those business owners for change. You will be very UNPLEASANTLY surprised at their response…..🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮👎🏼
