Its not about being a cheap charley. When you've lived in thailand for over 10 years you are totally used to paying thai prices, so when you travel to tourist areas the cost is a bit of a shock.

Yikes! So I searched on Agoda for your place you stayed last year Krabi Forest Homestay…you paid 14usd is about 450 THE.. the room now is 814 TH or 26 USD and this was for a random day in April…low SEASON!!! Why the huge price difference?
Nice video… I lived in Ao Nang for 7 years (leaving a year ago) and you're right about all the growth, change and rising prices. The infrastructure is poor and can't handle the growth, but maybe some people don't mind doing without water or electricity for a day or two at a time. You can save a bit of money on meals and booze by going inland but the cancer of tourism is reaching everywhere. I still wound up paying twice as much as I did five years ago. Bars? Most are nothing but a shack with an ice cooler. And BTW-the beach is crap.There are much better places to live than Ao Nang.
HEY JC, GOOD VIDEO VERY INFORMATIVE. THE ROCK FORMATIONS BEHIND YOU WERE BEAUTIFUL. I MUST SAY I THOUGHT THE PRICES WOULD HAVE BEEN HIGHER. OVER THE PAST 9 YEARS I'VE SEEN PRICES HERE IN KORAT STEADILY RISE. THE COFFEE SHOP I FIRST STARTED GOING TO WHEN I CAME HERE WAS CHARGING 25 BHAT FOR A MOCHA FRAPPE. NOW THAT SAME DRINK IS 45 BHAT. ALMOST DOUBLE. IT'S STILL A GOOD DEAL BECAUSE THE SAME THING AT STARBUCKS IN AMERICA WOULD BE $6.00. OF COURSE I WOULD NEVER GO TO A STARBUCKS ANYWAY.

stayed there very nice place jc kraby au noung , best holiday off my life , booked a month in bangkok first , but not for me far too big , next year me and cooke will be moving to hue hin having a new house built ,there will start after christmas, and take seven months to compleation, living in spain at the moment,

I stay in a hotel in Krabi Town and hire a motorbike. Hotel plus motorbike works out cheaper than staying in noisey too touristy Ao Nang and you have transport to tour everywhere.
I read all these comments on how expensive it is to live in Thailand, and apparently in the Philippines. Well, just where did these people come from. Apparently they are trying to live on next to nothing. Based on what these people write, their lack of ability to spell, I have to assume they have little education. Then, as to what they had as a job where they made little money, and are trying to live on a very low budget. Well that's just too bad. Your expectations seem way out of line with reality. Maybe if you had worked a little harder you wouldn't be trying to live on a dollar a day.
Ao Nang isn't a good beach , come to Songkhla. It's a beach area with a handful of farang.

Do you live around Hua Hin? Did you take the airport bus to meet your friend and fly from there to Krabi? I went a few years ago with the bus from Hua Hin to Krabi, which is around 8 hours drive… not much more compared to the journey you took, considering waiting, checking in, waiting for luggage and getting the bus from the airport in Krabi to Ao Nang, don't you think?
We plan to visit in January 2019. My wife is Thai and she recommended this place. We plan to visit for about 2 months. Any recommendations? Thanks, John

North Thailand stays cheap, also near Laos…but Krabi, Phuket,Khao Lak are the MOST expensive places ;-))
My Thai Wife and I have been living in our Bungalow for 25 years now and investment in Hotels and retail has grown alarmingly in the last 3 years. Almost impossible at any time to park a car and thousands of Motor Cycles clogging what space there is. Greedy landlords and a long logistic train mean Ao Nang is quite a bit more expensive than places nearer to Bangkok. Beach pollution is a problem from untreated waste water which drains straight into the Sea at either end of Ao Nang Beach. What was the name of the place you stayed? We have Friends arriving later this Month. Thanks
Great video as always, JC and Nat! I was at Ao Nang beach area back in 2014. Never again. The beach was not clean, the prices was high, people was not so friendly. But the resort I stayed at was one of the most pleasant resort I have been to in Thailand, but seems to be gone. The Italian restaurant with the best Italian food I have tasted outside Italy also seems to be gone. But the Ao Nang beach area it self is beautiful on photo. May be there are better options for living further up the hills behind the beach?
All of Asia is going thru so called "development" changes. What is known as The City of London is very closely working with the Chinese government. China is going to be funding nearly all the development projects, and global projects as well. China is in the position of being an IMF, and will make loans to countries for internal projects. So yes, Asia is going to go thru a lot of further change, and of course taxes and paying off loans is going to come from you know who.
JC…I'm curious in your journey's around Thailand, I know you don't enjoy the hustle and bustle of Bangkok, but have you ever experienced & explored a Temple, not far from Don Mueang Airport called Wat Dharmakaya. It would be nice to know your assessment of your visit, from another farangs perspective
We went to Ao Nang in 2014 after watching your first video, we loved it, especially the islands. Just came back 2 day's ago from Kho Lipe Island..Spectacular! and half price stay in low season.
I can't believe people are complaining about pricing. Food costs are going up everywhere in the world. 2 dollars can't buy a small French fries at Macdonalds in Canada lol. those thai dishes would be 12 dollars.
I've recently become a huge JC fan because I feel the authenticity, love, happiness and he's identified his niche market. The reason I enjoyed this video is that I avoided beaches on my first trip of 26 days and now realise next time I visit, I'd like to hit a beach town. In full disclosure, I did spend three days in Jomtien to decompress from long flight and my first five full days in Bangkok. I didn't consider a few days in greater Pattaya as a beach trip. It was just to catch my breathe and ready myself for the meat of my itinerary in the N. ….. Though I have access to great beaches in FL, next time I'll dedicate a few days to a real "beach vacation.'

I always appreciate your videos. I have not been to Ao Nang in 22 years, lots of changes like everywhere in Thailand. It sounds like the crush of mass tourism has found that once sleepy little place to catch the long tail boats to Raily Beach. These days my girlfriend and I still live in Chiang Mai but travel abroad when we need to get away from the crowds.
I didn't see a link to those earbuds. I wanted to mention that if your headphones were Bose, the ear cushions can be replaced. There are lots of "copy" replacements on Ebay. There are replacement cables as well, depending on what model you had. I like the Bose earbuds. The batteries will eventually get less effective, and they're not user replaceable. But it's possible to operate them while they're charging, so you can use an external battery meant for your phone. I'm always looking for options, though, so please at least tell us the spelling and model of the ones you have. I'm always shocked at the level of hum when I turn off my Bose in the airplane. I keep them turned off during take off and landing. I keep them on for the entirety of the trip otherwise, whether I listen to anything or not.
