Both cats eat a predominantly wet food diet.

Paid a ton of $$ for this food as recommended by the vet…went okay for first 3 days but by end of the week my cat wouldnt touch it…
This food is great for early stages but eventually they may fall ill and the vet will talk about euthanasia. Don’t listen ask about subcutaneous fluid therapy. It brought my cat back from the dead with multiple cases of pancreatitis. It gets easier every time you give the shot. Iv been giving my cat sub-q for a year now and you wouldn’t even know he has an illness.
My cat will only eat the pate with tuna wet k/d. I add water and mix then strain out any solids. He’s a fat cat about 18 lbs so I want the water with as little caleries as possible. He doesn’t have a eating problem as long as he likes the flavor so I have to diet him or else he’ll eat all day. He won’t touch the chicken flavor or any of the other brands which sucks cause hills isn’t shipping out the tuna and it’s on back order right now.

I started my cat on Hills K/D today, transitioning. I didn't know that cats with kidney problems should not eat grain-free, so that helped. I don't understand how corn gluten or corn meal and stuff like that could be good for a cat.

Three years later we are generally being advised absolutely no dry food (ugh) n preferable to use uncooked healthy meats… I don't do raw, but trying to wean 2 of mine off the dry food n more of the canned. They hate that idea. Hoping your cats have been living well 🙂
None of my cats with renal issues would eat the hills dry food They did like the taste of the Royal Canin "A" dry food My cats on renal support diets mainly eat a diet of wet food which is much better for them and keeps them hydrated
My cat with kidney disease was liking the KD wet food very much at the beginning and believe me I tried many others, but eventually she was getting tired of it and I had to add flavor supplements such as chicken bone broth and canned salmon with mostly omega-3 fatty acids which is more important than omega six because from what I read omega sixtends to promote inflammation. But eventually I had to get an appetite stimulator from the vet because I think Cats just simply get sick of it because it’s not the flavor that they are used to. It’s very frustrating, I have to really encourage my cat sometimes by holding the bowl up to her mouth and talking calmly to her and then she will continue to eat. Any other ideas will be greatly appreciate it. Also forget about asking your vet, at least in my situation they don’t seem to know that much as far as the food and additives and whether this one or that one is the right one and they seem to get annoyed with questions even though you are paying them every time you go there they should at least take the time to discuss the problem when an issue comes up. But they all seem to be the same, they will take their sweet time getting back to you even when it’s in The form of an email. Vets these days are getting like people doctors, slow to respond and no bedside manner !
My cat does well on Hill prescriptions diet he does better on dry ones because the wet foods gives him diarrhea. Lol even my other young cat likes it.
Had a terrible experience with this stuff.
A vet I went to for my 16 year old cat gave me a prescription for this same wet food. Hills KD. I gave it to my cat for 6 months, and he was okay with it but not very pleased. After the 3rd month or so he hated it. He would eat periodically but was not excited to do it.
Then, After the 5th month he almost completely stopped eating. He had gone from about 12-9lbs in the short span of about a week. We made an appointment at a NEW vet after about day 4 of him losing that weight. Finally got him in and the vet was very adamant NOT to give ANY of my cats this food ever.
She said they don’t believe in it, and feel it does more harm to the appetite of elder cats than it does aid them.
Long story short, the vet who scribed it neglected to teach me and treat my cat on many things about kidney disease, my second opinion went on to show me. Also, was taught how this Hills brand pays vets to push their brand. Because incentives some vets will use it even when it’s not necessary and even try to use it in place of better options all in the name of making sales and reaching quota.
My vet did just this. He didn’t teach me anything about subcutaneous fluids, or appetite and nausea medications, or CBD, or the fact that as long as food doesn’t have Phosphorous it should be just fine.
He wouldn’t teach me anything. He just gave me products. Not saying the brand is bad, it may work wonders for your cat, but if your vet is prescribing this to your cat I would 100% get a second opinion on it before continuing unless you are familiar with your vet already and trust them…And also spend some spare time educating yourself, there’s so much to learn on how you can make your cats life healthier and happier!
Thanks for this! My 13 y/o cat has been on k/d dry for nearly 1 year now. My vet switched her after her labs came back with slightly elevated kidney enzymes. She did not mention renal failure stages. It is hard to get my cat to eat her food. We have to feed in isolation because our other cat bullies her out. I'm going to try some of the wet and see how that goes. I notice no change in her outward health appearance. I'm going back for her yearly labs in 2 months. She's also very chubby and will not play. I'm now grooming her more to help her where she cannot self clean. Her skin is also very dry and sensitive. I'm hoping to address all of these with some food and lifestyle changes. She is my heart, and my first pet after I moved away from home.
Cats with kidney issues should have a high protein and fat diet with no carbs. Cats don't eat carbs. This food is junk.
Thnx for the reviews .I read sciences based data that feral cats. that live /eat fromwildmoist sources to survive like birds small mammals etc have no typical renal failure issues at and older elderly age .My take moisture of all cat food including dry kibbles etc is vital to prevent the nasty feline renal diseases of pet cats.
this is really bad food… if you have a cat suffering from chronic kidney disease, you may want to consider switching them onto a raw meat diet. all these grain laden foods are whats making our cats sick in the first place.
Is there a grain free kidney food? This prescription food drives me crazy. Kibble is bad for kidneys also. No water to it.
Hills c/d food made my cat sick this past week after eating tainted food. I had opened a new bag we got, both my cats refused to touch it. They’ve been on it for 8 years. The food was tainted. Hills wants to reimburse my vet cost but wants me to shut up. I don’t want or need their money, I will continue to speak out about their tainted food. In the 7 days my cats have been off it, they haven’t thrown up once. THIS FOOD IS SLOW POISON
