My first visit to the city was in 2003, and I intended to stay for about 3 – 5 days before touring. I ended up there for 10. Staying out in Ramkamhaeng was definitely not normal for a tourist at that time. With no particular plan I would get up in the morning and go to the bus stops at the end of the Soi, then just get on a random bus and see where it took me.
The people were incredibly friendly and helpful, the food in the back streets delicious, and things seemed so cheap (73 Baht to the pound!). Since then I spend most of my time up north, but occasionally will have a few days in Bkk.
I fully endorse the boat trip – a great way to escape from the bustle and see areas most people will miss.
The Golden Mount does indeed give great views of the city – and it has been renovated nicely since my previous visits, when it seemed quite run-down and I would often find just one or two other visitors.
One thing I learned quickly about crossing the road – it helps to find a monk who is crossing and go with him, as drivers are a little less likely to aim at you . . .

Excellent review. Have been a few times and plan to go again. I will try for the apartments you mentioned. I must get to the market, never managed the trip out there, I promise to do so next time and what a great tip about the flea market close by. Can I ask one thing, can you watch out for the music volume over the commentary. Difficult for some to hear speech over music at that level. Apart from that a really really good report on Bangkok. I'd already subbed when watching your trip to Myanmar (which I think came after this video).

My friend Sara told me today when we met over a cup of coffee, that her sister who for many years had been a teacher at the University in Thailand is now unemployed, and that several universities in the country have now been forced to close because they do not have enough students.
Sara explained that in elementary school everything is free for the students and they get 50 Baht from their parents every day to buy food for, but if they go on to the university it costs a lot that the parents have to pay, and they do not have the money today, so their kids may end up after elementary school.
With the poor education of 8-10 years that is not even worth the name, the coming generation becomes even more ignorant, and then it is the generation that will take over the country when those who are now working become too old.
The result everyone understands how it will turn out, a hope of poorly educated elementary school students without imagination, knowledge or the least constructive thoughts to lead the country, and the same goes for education for special jobs that they have to go to primary school for which parents also have to pay, so the situation is just as bad with a shortage of students.
Don't need to say much more, you do understand how it will end for Thailand in a few years.

The best 'rooftop' experience is also in the state tower, but not the bar that everybody goes to and is always packed. it's a bit of a secret.
